Nancy Wilson, one of the hottest female singers on the scene today, opened a 10 day engagement at the Grand Show Bar on Joy Road, Tuesday.

In less than a year, the attractive Miss Wilson has become one of the big record sellers for Capitol records. Her recent albums, “Hello Young Lovers”, “Broadway-My Way”, “Hollywood-My Way” have successes commercially.

In previous Detroit appearances, she attracted big crowds to Baker’s Keyboard Lounge. This is her first engagement at the relatively new Grand Bar.

Downbeat magazine describes her as one of the most talented new and exciting song stylists around today. She is married and earlier this year gave birth to her first child. Her stay at the Grand will run through to August 23.

Pianist Gene Harris of the Three Sounds, provided folks at the 20 Grand with a pleasant surprise over the weekend when he ended his performance playing a soulful tune on the organ. Chances are there will still be more surprises in store before the 10 day engagement ends.

First on the list of surprises was the discovery that bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy were students of the piano throughout their school years.

Andy also took clarinet lessons, became interested in the bass while keeping a friend’s instrument; and Bill began drum lessons when his interest in the piano waned.

Harris is a self taught stylist, who manages to master a number of instruments by sheer desire, began his musical career on a friend’s piano. By the time he was fifteen he formed a trio which enjoyed mild success on local radio shows and in weekend jobs in clubs. At the time Bill Dowdy was also a member of the trio which formulated in Benton Harbour, Michigan.

When the fellows graduated from high school, the group broke up. Gene went in the service and Bill went on the road. Then in 1956 the two got together again along with Simpkins whom they had met in South Bend, Indiana.

Until folks began to wonder which player belonged to what instrument, the group would switch instruments quite often for a change of routine.

The trio, now Mercury recording artists, will try another versatile switch on their next album with the big band of Quincy Jones. It should prove a nostalgic session as Gene played with the army band, Bill with the Rupert Harris Orchestra and Andy with the Wilberforce University.
