This image shows the area around downtown
Detroit which transcends Woodward Avenue. Woodward neatly splits Detroit into an
east and west side and runs for many miles. Close to the horizon is West Grand
Boulevard which is four miles away.
Living in sixties Detroit was
a unique experience. Undoubtedly tough and uncompromising but vibrant and
exciting.
This website hopes to provide an insight into this unique period in Detroit's
chequered history.
The articles will concentrate on the music industry and those who made Detroit
tick in leisure time.
One man, Berry Gordy Jr, is at the very heart of the story. Gordy's Motown
Corporation fuelled a frenzy of creativity as local entrepreneurs attempted to
gain a foothold on this potentially lucrative industry.
SixtiesDetroit will
examine Berry's local
competition in detail including the producers, arrangers, songwriters, and their
vast array of talented artists.
It will also look at
the legacy left behind by these talents and how their work impacted on the lives
of those who continue to crave for the Detroit Sound forty years later.
Sixty studios, six hundred record labels, countless bars, lounges and night
clubs make this an enthralling story.
