Hayes (Stax album track)
The music scene in sixties Detroit was wide
open.
It should be mentioned that besides the standard
R&B sessions being recorded at Tera Shirma,
there was also a very large number of bands
coming through the studios.
Groups such as Funkadelic, SRC, The MC5, Frigid
Pink, Rare Earth, Teagarden and Van Winkle, Bob
Babbitt's Scorpion, Mandala, The Human Beings,
Heads Over Heels, Mitch Ryder....etc.
The Funkadelic sessions were wild. Like one big
musical party. They would set up over the entire
studio and George Clinton would direct the whole
thing. It was almost like a stage act.
When John Rhys first brought in the SRC, this
also seemed to usher in a new way of recording
bands. It was the first time I had ever seen
roadies hauling in all the equipment and setting
everything up. They also, like Funkadelic, took
over the entire studio floor space.
The MC5 did the infamous Kick Out The Jams
Motherf...ers. When they were doing the vocals
even my music business jaded ears perked up and
I said.." They said what???!!! "
Here is a band that cooked it's own goose.
Because of the language content, JL Hudson Co.
refused to carry the MC5 record. The band in a
naive fit of anger took out a full page ad in an
underground newspaper that simply said...F>>K
HUDSONS!!
TSK TSK guys...Hudsons was a major outlet for
record sales in those days. To salvage any lost
prestige with Hudsons the record company (I
believe it was Atlantic) terminated the groups
contract. In all fairness, there was a second
version where they said Kick Out The Jams
Brothers and Sisters instead of MFers. I don't
know if that was done before or after the fact
though.
Mike Valvano would record House of the Rising
Sun with Frigid pink. Poor Mike. He sweat
bullets getting anything out of this band that,
at that time anyway, did not have a lot of
experience. I thought he was crazy to re-do
Rising Sun. The thing had just been a hit a few
years before with
The Animals. I don't know how he did it, but
Mike made a very big record with that song.
Strange things do happen from time to time.
At any rate I thought it was important to
mention the bands in the Tera Shirma story.
Here is an example of some of the music that
came out of Tera Shirma.
